Air Freight Shipping: Airport Hand-Offs, Dim Weight, and Quotes

Air freight shipping is a process: tender, screen, fly, recover, deliver. Chargeable weight and missed cutoffs matter more than the airline logo on the MAWB.

Air freight shipping is a sequence, not a sticker. Cargo is tendered to a gateway, screened, built onto a flight, recovered at destination, and trucked to the dock. Each hand-off has a cutoff. Miss one and the “next flight out” language on a sales deck is fiction.

COL Freight Solutions will map that sequence against your must-arrive time and against truck. We coordinate air freight shipping when it is the right spend, then stay on recovery so the airport is not where visibility dies.

The air freight shipping timeline you can plan

Count backward from the consignee’s receiving hours, not from wheels-up. Recovery, customs if international, and last-mile appointments eat more calendar than shippers expect.

Deferred air exists for a reason: it is still faster than ocean and often cheaper than priority. If your date has slack, say so on the quote instead of buying the most expensive product by habit.

Documents that keep cargo from sitting

Commercial invoice, packing list, and a commodity description a screener can understand. “Samples” is not a description. Lithium and chemicals need the right declarations or they do not fly.

For Mexico, airport entry is still an entry. Your agente aduanal owns the pedimento. COL coordinates the freight legs; we do not replace that license.

Building units for the hold, not the warehouse aisle

Height, overhang, and a pallet that can be forklifted without collapsing matter in a ULD. Banding that fails at the gateway becomes a rebuild charge and a missed flight.

Do not shrink-wrap a leaking drum and call it air freight shipping. The gateway will reject it, and the clock you bought is gone.

Where quotes go wrong

Using scale weight when dim weight is larger. Forgetting pickup on a street without a dock. Assuming Saturday recovery in a city where the GHA is closed. COL will list assumptions; read them.

Fuel and security surcharges move. A quote is for the shipment and the service level you asked, not a year-long tariff.

Start the sequence with a COL quote

Send ready time, pieces, weight, dims, and the arrival constraint. Request air freight shipping as a compared option, not as the default.

Questions shippers ask

What is a MAWB versus a HAWB?

The master air waybill is the airline’s contract. A house air waybill is issued when a forwarder consolidates. Ask which document you will receive so your import team files against the right number.

Can air freight shipping go airport to airport only?

Yes. Some shippers have their own cartage. Say that on the quote so COL does not price door legs you will not use.

How early should I book?

Earlier than a parcel pickup. Space, screening, and dangerous-goods approval are not on-demand. Give COL the ready time and we will say if the date is even possible.

Do you fly perishables?

Possible with the right packaging and airline product. It is not the same as a highway reefer set point. Describe temperature needs before we quote air.
