Cargo Transport Insurance: Carrier Limits Are Not a Policy
Ask who places cargo transport insurance and what the carrier’s legal limit actually pays. High-value freight needs a declared-value conversation.
Updated 2026-08-20 · cargo transport insurance
Cargo transport insurance is the conversation Mexican and U.S. shippers skip until a tarima is forklifted through a wrap. Motor carriers carry cargo legal liability with tight limits and exclusions—not a replacement-cost policy on your merchandise. If the commercial invoice is worth more than that limit, you are self-insuring the gap unless you place shipper’s interest coverage and declare value the way the policy requires.
COL Freight Solutions is a licensed property broker (USDOT 4427559, MC-1741651). We arrange transportation; we do not pretend a cheap flete includes all-risk merchandise coverage. When you request a quote, state commodity value and whether you already have a goods-in-transit policy. 561-880-9808 · shipping@colfreightsolutions.com.
What cargo transport insurance is—and is not
A broker or carrier certificate of insurance proves they have liability coverage of some kind. It does not automatically pay your full invoice if a claim is denied for packing, inherent vice, delay, or unattended trailer exclusions. Read the limit per pound or per trailer, not the marketing line “fully insured.”
Shipper’s interest or a póliza de transporte de mercancías is a separate contract. It can follow the goods warehouse to warehouse if that is how it was written. Ask your broker or insurer; do not assume the trucker bought it for you.
Released value and why LTL is unforgiving
LTL tariffs often cap recovery at a released value unless you declare a higher value and pay the rating that goes with it. Under-declaring to keep the flete down is how a claim check arrives as a fraction of the commercial invoice. FTL exclusive use does not magically create all-risk cover either; it only reduces touches.
How to brief insurance when you request the flete
Commodity, new versus used, packaging, declared value, and any temperature or theft-sensitive notes. Cross-border moves add the question of where the loss occurred and which policy territory applies. That is not paperwork theater; it decides who you call at 2 a.m.
- Keep photos of the loaded trailer and seals.
- Match the packing list to the BOL.
- Do not ship high value on a guessed LTL class and a hope.
COL Freight’s role on the claim path
We help assemble the tender documents, the rate confirmation, and the exception notations the receiver must make on delivery. Coverage still lives with the carrier tariff and any policy you placed. Recurring shippers who want a stable transportation partner can also ask about the Transportation Cost Recovery Program™—that is spend recovery, not insurance.
