A freight shipping calculator is a form that multiplies miles by a canned per-mile or a canned CWT. It can sketch a budget. It cannot see that your “two pallets” are 96 inches tall, that the delivery ZIP is a hospital with limited access, or that the commodity classed as 70 on your spreadsheet is 125 on the NMFC density table.

Why a freight shipping calculator underprices LTL
Most public tools do not apply NMFC density rules. They ask for weight and maybe a vague “freight class” dropdown. If you pick class 70 because it “sounds average,” and the pallet is 4 lb per cubic foot, the terminal will reclass. The calculator never warned you.
Linear-foot rules are another blind spot. Six long pallets can trip an LTL capacity flag even when the scale weight looks modest. The calculator still thinks you are a small shipment.
The density math you should run before the form
Pounds per cubic foot (PCF) equals weight divided by cubic feet. Cubic feet equal length × width × height in inches, divided by 1,728. Measure the pallet as it will sit on the trailer, including overhang and stacking height. That PCF is what density-based classes follow.
Inputs a human desk actually prices
Origin and destination, piece and pallet count, scale weight, L×W×H, commodity, hazmat status, pickup date, and facility type. For cross-border, the port of crossing or the fact that a crossing is required. Calculators rarely have a field for “live unload at a club store.”
- Do not round dimensions down to make the tool look cheap.
- Do not skip liftgate because the form hid the checkbox.
- Do not mix FTL exclusive-use with LTL CWT in the same screenshot.
