Otay Mesa Cross-Border Freight: the Commercial Gate for Baja California

Otay Mesa is where California trucks become Mexico trucks. COL Freight Solutions treats the commercial POE as an operation—not as a pin next to San Ysidro.

Otay Mesa cross-border freight is the commercial truck product of the San Diego–Tijuana metro. The Otay Mesa Port of Entry is built for loaded and empty trailers; San Ysidro is not. COL Freight Solutions coordinates FTL, LTL consolidations, and equipment balance through this gate for shippers whose plants sit in Mesa de Otay, El Florido, Pacífico, or whose U.S. DCs sit in East Otay Mesa and Chula Vista.

FAST-capable carriers, Mexican Aduana Otay hours, U.S. CBP processing, and whether the move is empty or loaded change the queue more than the five miles of surface streets. Typical local crossings can complete in hours when the pedimento is ready. They depend on customs when it is not. We will not sell a guaranteed crossing slot.

What the Otay Mesa POE is for

Commercial motor vehicles, in-bond movements that are set up for this port, and the daily IMMEX loop. It is not the passenger wait-time graphic you see on local news. If your driver is holding a tourist-crossing ETA, they have the wrong briefing.

Calexico East remains the right commercial story for Mexicali. Tecate remains a secondary gate. Do not send Mexicali freight to Otay because both are “Baja.”

  • Loaded southbound vans with a single Mexican delivery
  • Northbound finished goods with a U.S. DC appointment the same day—when papers allow
  • Empty repositioning that still needs a crossing plan and a receiver for the equipment

How we plan an Otay dispatch

Pickup time is set backward from Mexican receiving hours and from a realistic POE window, not from a driver’s coffee preference. Sealed FTL is simpler than a consolidation that must be opened. If X-ray or secondary is likely for your commodity, we say so up front instead of acting surprised at the booth.

Partner yards on both sides exist for drops. COL does not operate a named street warehouse on Siempre Viva or in Mesa de Otay. Offices: Los Gatos, CA, and Saint Petersburg, FL. Phone 561-880-9808.

Documents at this specific gate

The commercial invoice, packing list, Mexican pedimento, and U.S. export filing still apply even when the haul is ten miles. Carta porte applies on the Mexican side. Your agente aduanal should already work Otay; importing a Laredo-only broker into this gate is how files stall.

Beyond the metro

Otay is also the exit for longer California origins—Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, even the Bay Area—when Baja is the destination. That is linehaul plus this POE, not a local dray. Recurring Otay volume may qualify for the Transportation Cost Recovery Program™.

Questions shippers ask

Is Otay Mesa the same as San Ysidro?

No. Otay Mesa is the commercial truck port. San Ysidro is the passenger crossing. Loaded freight uses Otay Mesa.

Do you guarantee a morning Otay crossing?

No. Typical ranges exist. Release depends on customs, inspections, and traffic at the POE. We plan buffers with your plant hours.

Can LTL freight cross at Otay Mesa?

Yes, usually as a consolidation product with extra handling versus a sealed FTL. The customs file must match how the freight is actually riding.

Is COL a customs broker at Otay Mesa?

No. We are a U.S. property broker (USDOT 4427559, MC-1741651). Licensed customs professionals on both sides still handle the entry.
