Freight vs Shipping: Which Term Fits Your Load?
Freight vs shipping matters on RFPs and dock paperwork. Freight is the commercial cargo and how it is rated; shipping is the general act of moving goods.

Freight vs shipping shows up in every RFP and still confuses new logistics hires. Shipping is the general act of moving goods. Freight is the commercial cargo—and the charge to move it—rated on class, density, and equipment rather than a retail zone chart.
COL Freight Solutions works the freight side: licensed brokerage for FTL and LTL across USA, Mexico, and Canada. If your team uses the words interchangeably, quotes come back wrong because carriers price freight rules, not store-counter shipping.
Freight vs shipping on the dock
A parcel driver scans a label and leaves a box. A freight driver needs a bill of lading, a place to back in, and often a pallet jack. Calling that pickup “shipping” is fine in conversation; calling it parcel on the quote request will get you the wrong product.
Consignees that run appointment docks will reject small-package overflow stacked on a pallet without a PRO. Align language with how the receiver actually unloads.
Who owns the word “freight” in a contract
In U.S. usage, freight can mean the goods, the movement, or the line-haul charge. Invoices that say “freight prepaid” or “freight collect” are talking about who pays the carrier bill, not about whether a UPS Ground label exists.
Spanish-speaking plants often say flete for the cost itself. If your PO says “shipping included” but the vendor tenders LTL, you still need to know who files the claim and who pays accessorials.
Rating logic is the real split
Parcel: zone, weight, and sometimes dimension. Freight: NMFC class or FAK, density, linear feet, and accessorials. Mix the two and you will compare a $box rate to a pallet rate and think someone is gouging you.
COL will not invent a per-pound parcel-style number for a four-pallet LTL tender. Ask for a freight quote with class or density so both sides are pricing the same object.
When the distinction changes the mode
If marketing says “we only ship small orders” but operations stretch-wraps 40×48 pallets, you are already in freight. If you occasionally send a sample kit, stay on parcel. The hybrid shipper needs both contracts and a rule for which dock door to use.
Cross-border USA–Mexico adds another layer: the inland move is freight even when the commercial invoice looks like a small shipment. Do not assume a parcel broker can clear a palletized entry.
Ask COL to price freight, not “shipping”
Send pallet count, weight, dimensions, and whether the sites are dock or residential. That is enough for COL to treat the request as freight vs shipping and recommend LTL or FTL.
