LTL Shipping for Palletized Freight That Does Not Fill a Trailer

LTL shipping shares a trailer among several shippers. You buy cube and handling, not a dedicated van. Class, density, and terminals decide the bill.

LTL shipping is how you move a few pallets without paying for empty space in a 53-foot dry van. Your freight shares the trailer, gets handled at terminals, and is rated on class, density, and accessorials rather than a simple per-mile FTL number.

COL Freight Solutions quotes LTL alongside FTL so you can see when consolidation still wins. Bring pallet count, dimensions, weight, and stackability. Guessing class without density is how LTL invoices grow after pickup.

How LTL shipping actually moves

Pickup is often a city truck or a pup. Freight is scanned into an origin terminal, sorted onto a linehaul trailer, then broken down at destination for a delivery run. Each touch is why damage-sensitive cargo sometimes belongs on FTL instead.

Transit is a window, not a courier scan every hour. Cutoffs exist: freight that misses the outbound door sits until the next scheduled load. Ask COL for a planning range on your pair of ZIPs, not a blog SLA.

Class, density, and the cube you think you have

NMFC class runs from dense, damage-resistant commodities at the low end to light, fragile freight at the high end. Density (pounds per cubic foot) is the argument. Inflatable product that you call “one pallet” can rate like a sofa.

Linear feet matter when your pallets cannot be stacked or cannot share space. Six tall non-stackable pallets can eat a trailer like a volume move even if the scale weight looks modest.

  • Dimensions on every pallet, not just total weight
  • Stackable yes/no and turnable yes/no
  • Hazard class if any—LTL networks have restrictions

Accessorials that are not “extra if they feel like it”

Liftgate, inside delivery, residential, limited access, appointment, and sort-and-segregate are priced because they consume labor and time. If the site is a farm, a school, a mall back pad, or a downtown hoist, say so on the quote.

Reweigh and inspection programs exist. If you under-declare, the carrier will correct it. COL would rather price the real cube than argue an invoice two weeks later.

When to stop using LTL

If you regularly cube out, if the commodity hates terminal handling, or if the receiver will only take a dedicated appointment with a sealed trailer, quote FTL. Volume LTL or partial can be a middle step.

Cross-border LTL is a different animal than domestic LTL: partners, transload, and customs timing. Do not paste a U.S. terminal map onto a Mexico delivery.

Quote LTL shipping with COL

Send the spec sheet and request an LTL quote. If you also want the FTL number on the same freight, say so in one email.

Weekly LTL into the same DCs is the kind of cadence that can later support a Transportation Cost Recovery Program™ conversation for qualifying partners.

Questions shippers ask

How many pallets can go LTL?

There is no universal piece cap. The limit is cube, weight, and the carrier’s volume rules. Ten light pallets may still be LTL; four heavy non-stackable ones may need a volume or FTL quote.

Do I need to know my NMFC class?

It helps. If you do not, provide commodity name, packaging, and density so COL and the carrier can class it. “Freight” as a description is not a class.

Is LTL cheaper than FTL?

For small dense shipments, often yes. For light, long, or highly accessorial freight, FTL can win. Quote both on the same facts.

Can COL pick up LTL at a location without a dock?

Yes if liftgate or limited access is on the quote. Surprise stairs and long carries are how deliveries fail. Describe the site.
