LTL vs FTL Cost: When Shared Space Loses to a Private Trailer
LTL vs FTL cost flips when cube, weight, or appointment risk fills a trailer. Run both modes on the same measurements.
Updated 2026-08-20 · LTL vs FTL cost
LTL vs FTL cost is the comparison every growing shipper eventually has to make. Less-than-truckload shares a trailer and a terminal network; you pay for class, cube, and handling. Full truckload buys exclusive use of the box; you pay for the truck whether you load twelve pallets or twenty-four. The cheaper mode is a function of space and time, not a slogan.
COL Freight Solutions quotes both products on USA, Mexico, and Canada lanes. Licensed property broker, USDOT 4427559, MC-1741651. Send one dim set and ask us to price LTL and FTL side by side: shipping@colfreightsolutions.com or 561-880-9808.
How LTL vs FTL cost is actually calculated
LTL typically uses hundredweight and NMFC class, with minimum charges and linear-foot or cubic-capacity rules. Extra terminal touches add days and claim exposure. FTL is a truck price plus fuel and the accessorials the docks create. There is no class on a standard FTL van; you own the cube.
If your freight is light and bulky, LTL class will punish you early. If it is dense and pallet-count heavy, FTL often wins before the scale looks “full.”
Operational triggers to switch modes
Watch pallet count, linear feet down the trailer, and whether the freight can be co-loaded. Fragile, high-value, or odor-sensitive cargo may need exclusive use even when the cube is small. Tight delivery appointments also favor FTL because you are not waiting on a terminal sort.
- Run dual quotes when you are filling a meaningful share of a 53-foot van.
- Count stack height; LTL cube includes the air you shipped.
- Include extra stops: FTL multi-stop versus several LTL bills.
Transit and damage are cost too
LTL is built for network density, not for your PO line. Each dock touch is a chance to crush a corner. FTL has fewer touches and a more predictable clock, which matters when the customer charges back missed windows. A “cheaper” LTL that arrives late is not cheaper.
Border lanes and the dual quote
Cross-border moves can look LTL on paper and operate like dedicated capacity because of handoffs and documentation. Tell us if the freight will transload or ride through. We will not force a domestic LTL template onto a cruce fronterizo.
