How to Reduce Freight Costs Without Starving the Dock
Freight costs fall when cube, class, and dock time are under control. Work the operations, then price the lane with a broker who sees both.
Updated 2026-08-20 · how to reduce freight costs
How to reduce freight costs is not a coupon hunt. It is a sequence of operational decisions: how high you stack, whether you wait to fill a trailer, which mode you buy, and whether the receiving dock manufactures detention. Carriers price the work you create. Change the work, and the rate has somewhere honest to go.
COL Freight Solutions coordinates FTL, LTL, warehousing, and USA–Mexico–Canada lanes as a licensed property broker (USDOT 4427559, MC-1741651). We will show the levers on your profile, then quote the resulting tender. 561-880-9808 · shipping@colfreightsolutions.com.
Density and class: the quietest way how to reduce freight costs
LTL bills cube. If you can lower stack height, nest product, or put more pounds in the same footprint, pounds per cubic foot rise and class often falls. That is a packaging project with a freight payoff, not a negotiation trick.
Print the NMFC item on the bill of lading when you have it. Guessing class 70 on bulky freight is a loan the terminal will collect with interest labeled “reclass.”
Consolidate before you shop another broker
Three LTL pickups to the same region in one week each pay a minimum and a terminal touch. One FTL on a planned day may clear all three. Ask warehouse if the customer will accept a later ship date in exchange for a full trailer. That conversation saves more than another round of spot bids.
Kill accessorials at the source
Liftgate exists because there is no dock. Inside delivery exists because the freight cannot stop at the tailgate. Appointments exist because the DC said so. You cannot wish them off the invoice, but you can choose ship-to locations, order sizes, and equipment that avoid them.
- Match trailer type to cargo so you do not pay specialized gear you do not need.
- Give realistic live-load windows; missed hours become detention.
- Avoid extra stops unless the revenue on that stop covers the accessorial.
Fuel, cadence, and recovery
You will not out-negotiate a diesel index. You can reduce miles via better routing and avoid deadhead-heavy lanes when you have a choice. Consistent volume on the same corridors also changes how capacity is offered.
After the operational work, ask COL Freight about the Transportation Cost Recovery Program™. It is built for shippers who move freight with us on a sustained basis—recovery on qualified spend, not a one-load stunt. Request a quote with the improved dim set so the baseline is real.
