What Is a Freight Broker? The Property-Broker Answer
A freight broker matches shippers with trucking companies. This definition is for shippers hiring capacity, not for people seeking a broker license.
Updated 2026-08-20 · what is a freight broker
What is a freight broker? Under U.S. rules, a property broker is authorized to arrange transportation of property by motor carrier for compensation. The broker does not take possession as the carrier. The broker selects, tenders, and pays the trucking company, then invoices the shipper under the broker-shipper contract.
COL Freight Solutions LLC holds that authority: USDOT 4427559, MC-1741651. We arrange FTL, LTL, and warehousing across the USA, Mexico, and Canada. This page exists so a plant manager knows whom they hired when they tender a truck.
The legal shape, without the career pitch
The FMCSA issues MC authority for brokers separate from motor-carrier authority. A broker must also meet bonding and process-agent requirements. Those facts matter to a shipper because they explain who is on the hook if a carrier is not paid, and why you should verify MC numbers instead of trusting a logo on a rate confirmation.
COL publishes its numbers because shippers should check them on FMCSA SAFER the same way they check a carrier.
What the broker actually does on your load
We take the specifications, find a carrier that can legally run the lane with the right equipment, issue a rate confirmation, monitor pickup and delivery, and handle the exceptions that do not fit a tracking link: a closed gate, a lumper, a border delay, a receiver who changed the appointment.
We do not drive the truck. If someone at the dock asks “are you the carrier?,” the honest answer is no. The name on the door of the tractor is the motor carrier.
What a freight broker is not
Not a freight forwarder. Not an NVOCC. Not an airline. Not a U.S. customs broker. Not a Mexican agente aduanal. Not a 3PL warehouse operator unless that 3PL also holds broker authority and you contracted that service separately.
COL offers warehousing as a coordinated service, still distinct from customs entry and ocean house bills.
Why shippers use a broker instead of calling carriers one by one
A single plant rarely holds contracts with every carrier who can cover a Thursday pickup in Mexicali and a Friday delivery in Pennsylvania. The broker’s network is the product, plus a desk that will still answer when the load is live.
Consistent shippers may qualify for the Transportation Cost Recovery Program™. That program rewards freight you actually move with COL. It is not a rebate on cargo we never booked.
